The Otavi Railway was built in 1900 by a consortium of German Banks and the South West Africa Co., a German Colonial copper mining enterprise.  Most of its locomotives were built by Henschel & Sons, notorious manufacturer of Axis tanks and armaments in WW1 and WW2. The mines and railway played an important part in both conflicts as well as the history of the Colony of South West Africa (now Namibia) and South Africa proper, which seized and operated the line during the wars.
