This is History
Longview Farm was the country estate of Kansas City lumber baron and philanthropist,
R.A. Long (1850-1934)
.
His city home was called
Corinthian Hall
and is now the
Kansas City Museum
.
He built Kansas City’s first skyscraper, the R.A. Long Building at 10
th
& Grand as headquarters for his Long-Bell Lumber Company.
He was a leading philanthropist and spearheaded the drive to build the Liberty Memorial commemorating
World
War I.
Longview Mansion and 50 other farm structures were constructed in just 18 months between 1913 and 1914.
More than 50 Belgian craftsmen and 200 Sicilian stonemasons were among the 2,000 workers employed.
They turned over 1,700 raw acres into
“The World’s Most Beautiful Farm.”
Loula Long Combs
competed for 65 years (and won) international horse shows in New York, Canada and England.
She was known as the
Queen of The American Royal
and is in the
Madison Square Garden Hall of Fame
.
All of her champion horses were raised and trained at Longview Farm, including her favorite Hackney,
Revelation
, whose grave marker is in front of the Show Horse Barn.   (see picture here) – See the great picture of Loula riding side-saddled.
I so wish I had had the opportunity to meet her.
As you read this treasure you will begin to know her.
She was kind, generous and you will understand that Longview Farm was a
Family
.
All the workers, wives and children loved The Longs and the Combs because they were such good people.
You will cry that Longview Farm couldn’t last forever.
It was so magnificent.  I hope some of the pictures reflect that, wish I could have put in many more.
Ebay is an interesting venue

Through Ebay I was able to meet and become friends with Loula’s grand-niece and her hackney trainer, Dave Smith’s two grand-daughters, and more recently, a friend of one of their cooks. Unbelievable!!!!
But
I’m delighted about it all.
I went back home to Missouri a couple years ago and was able to Visit Longview Farm well what’s left of Longview Farm and went to the
Kansas City Museum which was R.A. Long’s original mansion completed in 1910.
